What NOT to Wear to Military Functions

I’ve been inspired this week by the upcoming Air Force Ball and Miley Cyrus’s wardrobe at the VMA’s. Even if you are not a military brat or a spouse, you might at some point in your life end up at a military function. For instance a promotion ceremony or a pilot training graduation.  One rule of thumb that makes it easy is to match the person in uniform you are going with, however, make sure to always dress modestly and with class. You are a direct reflection of the person you are with, so make them look good! You can always ask yourself, what would Kate Middleton do? WWKMD.

Let’s start with the ABU or Flight Suit:

Now this is the most casual you will dress, besides of course the PT uniform. This would probably be an event like a squadron potluck or an assignment night. If you are really nervous about what to wear, I say wear a tee dress with a statement necklace. Here are some pictures for reference (pictures might be outdated):

IMG_2022IMG_2044-0

Oh Tom…. Ok, back to business!

If they are wearing this, you will wear something casual but cute.  This could be anything from jeans and a cute top to a sundress – so if you are not sure, wear something in between. Probably not the place to bring out your crop top or your cut off shorts, you might run into his boss or his work friends.  Also, this is what you would wear to spouse socials, such as OSC/ESC. Here are some examples:

Air Force Blues: (This is going to look similar to a suit)

This is most likely to be worn at Change of Command ceremonies, retirements, promotions, and graduations.

IMG_2021

So if they are wearing this, you will wear something similar to what you would wear to a wedding – a sundress, a lace dress, a nice maxi dress, etc. I’d say avoid spaghetti straps, but a modest strapless dress would be appropriate. Some great places to shop for these occasions would be Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Anthropologie, LOFT, and J. Crew. As a rule of thumb, don’t get your dresses from somewhere you shopped in High School, like American Eagle or Forever 21 – not that you can’t find a good one there ( I have a few), but you are most likely OVER 21 now, wear adult clothing.  Here are some examples:

And here is a Kate example:

IMG_2014

WHAT NOT TO WEAR:  These dresses all have a place, but not to an event where your military member is wearing his/her blues.

IMG_2049

And finally, Mess Dress:

This is the fanciest you will get, and when I say fancy, I mean fancy-fancy. I’m not talking Easter Sunday, I’m not talking holiday party, I’m talking full length gown fancy.  So please don’t show up in a sundress.  If you are nervous about wearing a full-length gown, wear a fancy short cocktail dress. That is acceptable. Just make sure to have on some sparkle, cute shoes, and a clutch. Here is what it will look like:

IMG_2020

It is best to wear a full length gown or a fancy cocktail dress.  No poof, no see through, no low back, no side-boob, not a ton of cleavage, and no train. We are NOT talking your prom dress.  If your 16 year old self would have worn it to Homecoming, DO NOT WEAR IT TO A MILITARY FUNCTION. Channel Kate Middleton when you are shopping.  Great places to shop are BCBG MaxAzria Outlet, Nordstrom Rack online, Saks Fifth Avenue’s OFF Fifth, the J. Crew wedding section, and Rent the Runway! Here is what I would wear (and disregard the hanger straps – it seems it doesn’t matter how many times I stuff them back in, they always pop out!!! So maybe learn from me and just cut them off) :

IMG_2007

IMG_1965

Here are a few more examples of what would be appropriate (disregard any trains):

And here is what NOT to wear:

IMG_2042

Remember, you are a direct reflection of your spouse, your friend, or your family member – make them look good! It is not all about you and how hard you’ve worked all Summer to look good in that dress.  But YES, you can still have a lot of fun with it and be yourself, just not the Kim Kardashian version of yourself. Bring her out when you go to Vegas.

However, if your man is wearing this:

You should wear this:

I mean, obviously.

Casual Friday

ITS FRIDAYYY. My personal favorite day of the week, because I can wear my Oklahoma Kitty t-shirt to work, THE BEST.  Of course with a tweed jacket and leather coated skinny jeans.

IMG_6025

And these FABULOUS suede maroon pumps, or as Daniel calls them, my princess shoes. Because every Friday deserves a Cat Tee and Princess shoes. Cheers to that.

Floral Blazer – 4 Ways

Well I don’t know about you, but I have a thing for floral print.  A MAJOR thing. So a floral blazer? Well, it was a done deal. Here are 4 ways to wear it:

IMG_6023

The easiest way to wear it is with a t-shirt and jeans.  (Bonus points if you wear them with colored jeans/cords) Just adds that extra sum’n sum’n to an otherwise plain outfit.

IMG_6024

A good casual Friday look would be with a flippy green skirt and a chambray shirt. (I’m pretty much a walking advertisement for LOFT at this point….. they should pay me)

IMG_8955

Of course floral print with stripes. It is the new classic print mix combo.  Get to know it!

IMG_9339

I was putting together another look with this black sweater dress and decided that the floral blazer looked awesome with it! Sometimes the best looks are literally thrown together last minute. Over the knee boots and a mini dress, how could you go wrong?

My Weekend Looks

Happy Cold Weather!

I felt super cute this weekend (except for Friday, but Friday is still a weekday… it doesn’t count), so I decided to share it with you all.

SATURDAY SHOPPING

Well Saturday I decided I would go down to “the city” and get some Christmas shopping done. When I wrote that, I felt like I was writing a Jane Austen novel, when the family decides to “go to town” which is like 10 miles away and all the girls buy ribbon. But in this town there’s a J.Crew!

IMG_8168

I didn’t feel great Friday, so I thought I would go cozy and comfy with this boxy crop sweater from LOFT. When wearing a boxy sweater or top, pair it with something form fitting underneath to give yourself shape.  Unless you are a box… which is unlikely.

IMG_8172

I thought pairing it with our Chunky Gold Chain necklace would be a great pairing, since the sweater is simple and has a high neckline. And of course, Kate Spade…. Kate Spade anything.

GAME NIGHT

What to wear to game night…. you want to be able to move around , sit on the floor, and look cute.  Cute and sweet, so no one will suspect your competitive spirit.

Why not go with a maxi dress?

IMG_8169

Brown + teal = 😀

IMG_8167

You just cant go wrong.  I also put a statement necklace under the scarf so I could take it off when I started to get more intense with the game playing.

IMG_8173

I just love how my husband knows my love of twirling.  I mean really, who doesn’t?

IMG_8171

FAMILY PICTURES

Well I wanted to wear something semi-festive, but not so much so that I couldn’t use the pictures for something else.  SO, hunter green dress, booties, and a statement necklace. OH and our cat… but thats a whole other story…

IMG_8166

Ok yeah we brought our cat to family picture time at my husbands work… THEY SAID TO BRING PETS. So we brought Brutus in a bow tie.  Which ended up being me with a cat hair covered dress.

IMG_8170

But hey, you do what you do for your family, even if it is just your cat.

Transitioning to Winter

Well, we had a week between 90 degrees and 30 degrees.  It was a nice week.  I went outside, didn’t have to wear shorts, nor did I have to wear a coat.

I miss those days already….

I’m taking this white tee and jeans look from Fall to Winter.

Of course it all starts with an army jacket and a light weight scarf.  And just so you are aware, I am just wearing a white tee shirt, jeans, and booties, then changing everything else.  (Oh and the same purse – that won’t change until I start getting paid to do this, I’m not a professional people!)

IMG_7919

To take it a step further, I add a fuzzy bomber jacket and a slightly heavier scarf.

IMG_7918

This jacket is actually on sale now at Anthropologie! And it is SUPER soft and comfy. It also falls at a nice place on my waist, just enough crop to make it flattering.

Also, notice the front tuck? Yeah I’m J. Crewin’ it up. (at least trying…)

IMG_7917

As you can see from my other posts, I can’t get enough of this scarf.  It literally goes with my entire wardrobe.

And now for the winter coat.

IMG_7920

Ok, I have to admit, I am a little excited to wear this one. I put it with a soft metallic sweater knit scarf – COZY.

IMG_7913

OR you can just put it with your summer chiffon infinity scarf.  You won’t be as cozy, but you will look fabulous!

IMG_7912

Just think of your winter coat as an outerwear dress.  You want to accessorize it too!

Here is the jewelry I’m wearing underneath:

Just something simple.  It is always good to have a simple long necklace you can throw on with anything!

Chunky Gold Chain

So I was on Pinterest last night and found something Pinteresting (see how I did that? I made Pinterest into an adjective…).  In a capsule collection by Giuliana Rancic at LOFT there is a gorgeous chunky gold chain that looks VERY similar to one that we have at Niloulu!

So I thought I would take the look that Brittany Snow was wearing and do it myself.

Now of course I am not  Brittany Snow, but the look was pretty easy to put together.  All you need is a white blouse, patterned pants, a bright clutch, and of course the Chunky Gold Chain Necklace from niloulu.

How to find GOOD deals.

Merry (late) Christmas and Happy New Year!

My family is oddly good at getting me clothes I like for Christmas (well, maybe not that strange.. they are good at getting me gift cards, which are the same thing).  So many people feel odd giving gift cards, but like I’ve said to my family, it is really two gifts for me:  1. I get pretty new things. 2. I GET TO SHOP (and without feeling guilty). What better gift COULD there be??

So of course, I went shopping bright and early the morning of the 26th! I thought this post would be a good place to share when and how I find good deals and steals.

20131229-085426.jpg

My first major trick is just following the stores and items you are loving.  It has become an almost daily routine that if I see something I want, I check in on it while I am drinking my morning coffee (mmmm Nespressoooo). Do this especially if you get an email about a sale or that items have been added to clearance.  Also, if you see that the store you follow says that they have “new arrivals”, it probably means they have some “new arrivals” to the clearance section, if you know what I mean…

Most stores have items on sale in the store that are not on sale on line, or vice versa.  So, check both occasionally, you never know when that pair of Italian leather shoes at J. Crew will be on major clearance in the store but still full price online!  Most of my good deals are in stores as opposed to online.

20131228-181030.jpg

20131228-180933.jpg

(This dress is still full price online, but I got it in the store for $35!)
If you live in an area that has multiple malls or if you are visiting a new area, check out the stores you love in multiple places.  I assure you they will all have a different selection.  It is also interesting to see how a different demographic can change the store selection.  For example, in some areas one item will be sold out almost immediately, but at another store, no one wants that same item! So that dress you wanted during the summer but was too expensive and sold out too fast, might be five dollars at another store when you go home for the holidays. VICTORY!!

20131229-090445.jpg

(These shoes were $178 and I got them for $42!)

Lastly, although some shopping at outlets is good, a lot of times you will find better deals at the real stores.  Most of the stores at the outlets have a different clothing line made just for the outlet stores, and usually it is not as good of quality.  They will automatically mark down all the items in the store to make it look like you are getting a good deal, even though they were never sold at the original price on the tag.  So, spend the extra five dollars at the real store to get a better deal. Quality over quantity friends!

Enjoy your family, enjoy the good sales, and enjoy the last days of the holiday flavored drinks at Starbucks!

Sales I’ll be shopping:

Ann Taylor (Right after the holidays they will have some great deals because it gets really slow in January! Check for some 40-50% off sales)

J. Crew (right now they are having 40% off of sale styles, and I have found some great summer styles I wanted but now are very cheap!)

Madewell (They are doing 40% off of sale, and in stores the sale is very good.  Also, you can use a student ID on top of the sale!)

Anthropologie (Their sale section will start to get larger and after the holidays they will probably mark down the prices)

LOFT (They have been doing 50% off the whole store… seriously, get it while you can!)
