All About Skirts

It officially hit 100 degrees in Oklahoma, making wardrobe decisions a little more tricky. Skirts are my saving grace during these hot summers because I can put on a cool tank with them and I am good to go!

Because of this reason I decided to do a skirt post (and maybe I got a request or two from friends). This is NOT a post for skirts in the fall or winter, maybe another time…..

Pencil:

I recently discovered Lularoe – which I was weirded out by at first, but now I love it! I wear this skirt to work all the time because it is comfy, cool, and easy to dress up or down! (Also makes my butt look PRETTY good if I must say so myself)

This one is perfect with an army vest (which btw is a MUST have) but also looks awesome with a slouchy tee tied to the side.  My new “thing” is to wear a color shirt that is very similar to the skirt or pants I am wearing and layer a jacket or vest over it – that way there isn’t too much going on and it also creates a slimming effect.

They have great vests at Old Navy, as well as these amazing high-neck tanks!

When I pick out tops or accessories I look for one of the smaller colors within the print and  go with that – like these burgundy shoes and the floral print in the skirt. OR wear a striped/graphic tee and mix prints. (Keep it simple though)

Here are some more ways that I style the skirt – SO EASY. Tuck it in and wear a jacket/vest, or just front tuck it.

Here is why I front tuck:

I go from looking like a blob to looking like I have shape. ‘Nuf said.

Here is another look I’ve done with a black pencil skirt. I tucked in a black came and wore a lace crop top with it – giving the illusion of a black fitted dress underneath.

Hi-Lo and Maxi:

These skirts are so beautiful, but my goodness, not easy to wear. Luckily for you, I finally figured it out – crop top.

The great thing about a crop top is that you don’t have to tuck it or tie it, just throw it on! I got both of these from Express – and they both hit right at the waist line of my skirts, so I don’t have to have abs! Yay!

Another thing I have to say about these is that because the skirt has volume, it doesn’t look right if you wear something voluminous on top – so wear something formfitting with it.

Shift Skirt:

THESE ARE MY FAVORITE! From LOFT, of course, because of the structure they are very flattering as well. My favorite is to wear a high-neck tank with them and a statement necklace.

The second skirt is more fitted, which is why I put a more voluminous top with it.

However, the first skirt has more of a flare to it – so it looks better with a more fitted top. (This is one of my main “go-to”s this summer)

Below is another LOFT skirt. And again I am wearing it with one of the Old Navy high-neck tank tops!

A-line:

As you can tell, I have an a-line skirt formula – fitted tank, pendant necklace, maybe a belt. Pretty easy. I don’t really feel like talking about them any more because I have more important things to get to =D.

A t-shirt can also look good with these, just make sure it is fitted and not super loose! (Maybe even tied to the outside)

MIDI SKIRT!:

This is another one of my current favorites. It is a little bit awkward to wear, and you almost always have to have on heels, but I do love a good midi skirt.

I had my husband help me take this picture, which is why it looks like it was taken from space – BUT you get the idea. I put a crop top with it – SURPRISE! And I would also wear it with the striped one I paired with the purple maxi.  And guess what, I’m NOT wearing heels with this look, just really cool sandals.

I also have worn a fitted tank with this – but I do like the crop top better. I would not wear this with a t-shirt because I do think it would be too much volume and it could appear frumpy.

Mini Skirt:

I have done a few posts about these little mini skirts from J.Crew, so I will just repost a few pictures here!

To end my skirt segment – if it is a tight skirt, wear a loose top with it. If it is a voluminous skirt, wear a fitted top with it……. think that about covers it!

What topics should I cover next? Let me know!!

What I Wore Wednesday

I don’t know about you, but I was not ready to start waking up in the dark again.  For me, the time change looks like pressing snooze approximately 3 times, and have about 15 minutes to get ready for work. Which breaks down to 9 minutes doing makeup, 1 minute to brush my hair, and about 5 minutes to figure out what the heck I am going to wear.  Sweatshirt dress and flannel scarf? Sounds good.   IMG_9580

Because, I want to wear sweatshirts to work every day.

Pink Aluminium

J. Crew has a way with words.  Not only do they have the best colors, but they also are the best at naming their colors. I don’t usually go for pink, but this color has a little bit of an edge. I also think this color is going to start popping up a lot in the Spring (Along with a light to medium blue).IMG_9591

I look forward to wearing it with black skinny jeans, white jeans, and anything in medium blue — like the scarf pictured below!

IMG_9555

IMG_9599Oh how I love a good drapey sweater.  I am always looking for a good one that is cozy yet still flattering, and of course J. Crew has that look down.  They are not only the experts in color naming, but also disheveled chic. Which is how I try to dress on Mondays, even if it is by accident.

Winter in White

Something that people do not expect in winter is for you to wear white.  It is the season of blacks and browns and all the boring colors there are.  But what about those white dresses you have from the summer, who in all honesty, didn’t get worn much because of all the opportunities for them to get a little ketchup on them at the family BBQ.  Take them out for a stroll, they deserve it.

IMG_6026

All you need to do is add tights, boots, and a blazer — BAM! Outfit done. If I had a maroon leather jacket, I’d put it with this for going out.

IMG_9341

As you can probably tell, I’m pretty obsessed with maroon right now.  Like, I want at least one of every of piece of clothing in it.

Here is another way that I’ve worn a white dress in winter. Not much has changed…. just the jacket and jewelry. 20140207-132458.jpg

Black & White (& Taupe)

Since having a real job, I have realized the value of black and white more than ever before. It is the easiest to wear without sacrificing style! Plus all you really have to do is add a pop of color for a little bit of fun.  Also, switching out the black skirt for a white one really does make a difference!

IMG_6029

However I do have a very hard time wearing just black and white.  So a little taupe can help out with that.  I added this rose gold Rebecca Minkoff handbag and a Jersey Knit Bindhi & Brutus Scarf.

IMG_6027

Seriously obsessed with a white mini skirt right now!

Another way to play up the black and white is to try a white blazer.  Depending on the cut you can wear it with pants or a pencil skirt. I decided to wear my stretchy ponte pants with a leather trim and a black t-shirt.  I cannot even tell you how comfortable these pants are, it is ridiculous.

IMG_9490

Of course with a bright shoe, I think I might be obsessed with a colorful shoe right now. A good statement necklace can’t hurt either! There just needs to be a little more interest, since you are wearing a t-shirt to work…

IMG_9489

Add a leopard scarf for that chilly office and a Kate Spade purse for some class, and you have an outfit!

DRESSEMBER: Week 1

“Sex trafficking is a form of modern slavery in which someone coerces another person into commercial sex or exploits a child in the commercial sex trade. Simply, it is sexual violence as a business. The nightmare of forced prostitution thrives when law enforcement cannot or does not protect vulnerable children and women.”  – International Justice Mission

To think that this is happening to MILLIONS of children and women all over the globe infuriates me and inspires me want to do something about it.  So when I heard about Dressember, an event that involves wearing dresses every day in order to raise money and awareness in the fight against human trafficking, it was pretty obvious what I had to do: Team up with some beautiful ladies and join the movement!

You can see the rules and learn about the movement HERE!

Support our team here!

I think everyone has a cause that makes their heart heavy and this is mine. Instead of pouring ice water on my head I’ve decided to do this! I am going to try to post once a week to show you what dresses I’ve worn during the cold winter.  (Should be fun in Germany….)

DECEMBER 1:

IMG_8484

I had the day off from work, so I wore a maxi dress and knit on the couch almost the whole day – I’ve gotta say, I love me some maxi.

DECEMBER 2:

IMG_8489

Silk dress + booties + festive sweater = perfect holiday work outfit! I just love mint green during the holidays, its the less obvious winter color that I just can’t get enough of.

DECEMBER 3:

IMG_8492

Dressember — Made possible with boots and cozy jackets.

DECEMBER 4:

IMG_8485

Sweatshirt dresses can be worn to work with a fabulous blazer and a sparkly necklace!

DECEMBER 5: Christmas Party!

IMG_8486Yes the panther dress makes another appearance! I mean, what dress could be more perfect for your first work party that says “I’m classy but SUPER FUN!” than a dress with gold panthers on it?

IMG_8487

(yes that is a cat hair on my dress… don’t judge)

DECEMBER 6: Christmas Shopping

IMG_8488

Ok, this really is my formula for looking chic:  Over-the-knee boots + sheer tights+ mini dress + long jacket + long simple necklace.  SO EASY and warm!

DECEMBER 7: Church

IMG_8491

Oh yes leather and velvet.  This outfit will probably be repeated…. I just can’t get enough velvet, and my husband got me this awesome leather jacket for Christmas! WANT TO WEAR IT EVERY DAY.

Mary Katherine is another member of our team who is very passionate about this cause as well AND has impeccable style…. I mean check out this layering! She is amazing.  Get inspired by her looks this week:

My Weekend Looks

Happy Cold Weather!

I felt super cute this weekend (except for Friday, but Friday is still a weekday… it doesn’t count), so I decided to share it with you all.

SATURDAY SHOPPING

Well Saturday I decided I would go down to “the city” and get some Christmas shopping done. When I wrote that, I felt like I was writing a Jane Austen novel, when the family decides to “go to town” which is like 10 miles away and all the girls buy ribbon. But in this town there’s a J.Crew!

IMG_8168

I didn’t feel great Friday, so I thought I would go cozy and comfy with this boxy crop sweater from LOFT. When wearing a boxy sweater or top, pair it with something form fitting underneath to give yourself shape.  Unless you are a box… which is unlikely.

IMG_8172

I thought pairing it with our Chunky Gold Chain necklace would be a great pairing, since the sweater is simple and has a high neckline. And of course, Kate Spade…. Kate Spade anything.

GAME NIGHT

What to wear to game night…. you want to be able to move around , sit on the floor, and look cute.  Cute and sweet, so no one will suspect your competitive spirit.

Why not go with a maxi dress?

IMG_8169

Brown + teal = 😀

IMG_8167

You just cant go wrong.  I also put a statement necklace under the scarf so I could take it off when I started to get more intense with the game playing.

IMG_8173

I just love how my husband knows my love of twirling.  I mean really, who doesn’t?

IMG_8171

FAMILY PICTURES

Well I wanted to wear something semi-festive, but not so much so that I couldn’t use the pictures for something else.  SO, hunter green dress, booties, and a statement necklace. OH and our cat… but thats a whole other story…

IMG_8166

Ok yeah we brought our cat to family picture time at my husbands work… THEY SAID TO BRING PETS. So we brought Brutus in a bow tie.  Which ended up being me with a cat hair covered dress.

IMG_8170

But hey, you do what you do for your family, even if it is just your cat.
